A walk in the wild at Onguma Nature Reserve

Immerse yourself in the Namibian wilderness with a guided walking safari on the Onguma Reserve. One of our experienced rangers will take you out early in the morning, when it’s cooler, for a leisurely stroll through the reserve. The idea is to learn about the smaller details of the bush that you skip past on a game drive. Your guide will point out everything from animal tracks to termite mounds and medicinal plants used by local communities.

This is my favourite activity because it allows you to get out of your vehicle and amble through the bush. Although your ranger carries a rifle so you’re perfectly safe, it’s exhilarating knowing there are wild animals all around you. Once, I was incredibly lucky to approach a cheetah on foot. It’s very special being able to observe the smaller things too, the insects and birds – I love the colourful butterflies. If you want to extend the experience, you can even book a bush breakfast to finish your walk.

In the mornings, you can also join a ranger for a trip to our hide, which is named Onkolo after the zebra, and painted with black and white stripes. The hide is dug into the ground so that you can sit at eye level with the animals and they don’t even know you’re there. You just get to observe their natural behaviour. We’ve had a lot of award-winning photos taken from the hide. Your ranger will teach you about the birds and animals that come to the waterhole, offering a fascinating glimpse into Onguma’s wildlife.
