Spend an African-themed evening learning about Maasai culture, complete with traditional dancing and a BBQ feast. At Ngorongoro Tented Camp, we have a very close relationship with the local Maasai community, who’ve lived on this land for generations. Some now work at the camp and our assistant manager is actually the Chief’s son. We often invite members of the community in to share their culture with guests during our African-themed evenings.
We start with sundowners around the campfire and at 6pm, Maasai people come in to perform traditional songs and dances. The chief’s son will give a talk about the Maasai history, then the menu will be announced in Maasai, translated into English. There’s a roaring fire and bar, with a traditional BBQ feast, complete with spicy flavours, various types of meat and salads. You’ll be shown how to eat the Maasai way, with your hands rather than cutlery. Guests really enjoy this immersive experience and chance to learn about African culture.
Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Gemma, who's travelled extensively in Tanzania. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it on their own. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the rangers who'll ensure you'll spot the best wildlife, the village chiefs who'll give you a genuine insight into local life and the camp managers who can recommend the very best spot to enjoy your sundowner.
