Things to do in India

Join Mohammad for a textile workshop

I’ve been hosting workshops for 50 years now, it’s my way of keeping these ancient art forms alive…

By Mohammad Younis
Textile master

My family has been practising the art of tie dye for 700 years. They migrated from Persia to Udaipur, which is known for its crafts – from koftgari weapon ornamentation to block printing. People in Rajasthan like to dress in bright colours because we’re surrounded by barren desert. My parents taught me how to block print and tie dye by hand, using natural dyes and techniques.

I’ve been hosting classes at my workshop for 50 years now, it’s my way of celebrating and keeping these ancient art forms alive. When you arrive, I’ll welcome you with some chai and then show you the traditional textile processes from start to finish, from carving the wood for block printing to mixing dyes from natural ingredients such as turmeric for yellow, pomegranate for red.

The workshop takes about two hours and includes making your own tie dye handkerchief, which you can take away as a memento of your visit. Throughout the experience, we’ll chat about my family history with textiles and what life is like in Udaipur. I never repeat the same pattern in my work, I’m always experimenting and creating unique pieces, that’s what keeps things interesting and I love to share this process with guests.
