Stay among the treetops in Tarangire

By Sabore Laizer
Guide at Tarangire Treetops

Stay in a raised lodge that looks out over the treetops to the plains of Tarangire. Set on stilts, the treehouses are surrounded by the ancient baobab and marula trees that the area is famous for. They’re open-fronted with thatched roofs and a wooden deck so you can admire the views from our hillside location. Inside, you’ll find African décor with locally-carved furnishings and an en-suite bathroom. The views continue from our infinity pool and restaurant, which overlooks the watering hole where you’ll spot elephants, buffalo, hippos and zebra.

Guests love it here and think the scenery is amazing. We’re set on a reserve just outside of Tarangire National Park, so it’s a great location for game drives led by our qualified guides. Guests are often surprised by how much they see just driving through the reserve, but in the national park you’ll spot some of Africa’s largest herds of elephants and the rest of the Big Five, apart from the rhino. I love watching hyenas, they’re my favourite animal, but you’ll also see plenty of antelopes, giraffes, big cats and even rare tree-climbing lions.

At Treetops, we’re very connected with the local Maasai community. Many of our staff, like me, are Maasai people and guests really enjoy that cultural interaction; being shown to their room by a Maasai warrior is a very special start to their visit. Our Boma evenings are a big part of Treetops and feature an outdoor BBQ and a showcase of traditional Maasai songs and dance, with a blazing bonfire and lanterns hanging from the trees.  You can also take walking safaris with our Maasai guides who’ll teach you about the area’s flora and fauna, and visit the nearby village for a glimpse into everyday Maasai life.

Don’t miss sundowners from Sunset Hill. Every afternoon, you can enjoy watching the sunset over the national park with Lake Manyara in the distance, accompanied by snacks and cold drinks. What I enjoy most about Treetops is taking guests on night drives on the reserve. You get the chance to see nocturnal creatures you wouldn’t normally spot like honey badgers, leopards and owls – you can also admire the clear night sky, which is full of stars.

Plan your holiday withAlfred&

Your journey will start with one of our UK team – someone like Gemma, who's travelled extensively in Tanzania. They’ll shape your ideas into the trip of a lifetime. But they won't do it on their own. They'll draw on the expertise of our contacts on the ground, connecting you to the people who'll make your holiday one you'll always remember - the rangers who'll ensure you'll spot the best wildlife, the village chiefs who'll give you a genuine insight into local life and the camp managers who can recommend the very best spot to enjoy your sundowner.
