We love welcoming guests to Coral Tree, our boutique Agra homestay named after the trees in our garden, which bloom with scarlet leaves in the spring. This is our family home of 20 years, set in an area rich with history – we’re lucky enough to be less than ten minutes’ walk from the Taj Mahal. We thought, why not open our home to guests so they can stay with a real Indian family and try authentic cuisine while they visit Agra? We like meeting people from different cultures and as explorers ourselves – Gopal has been a tour guide for the past 30 years – we believe that travel is the best teacher.
Coral Tree is a brightly-painted home inspired by India’s love of colour, as well as Mexican and Moroccan design. It’s decorated with artefacts and photographs that show traditional Indian life, such as an old grinder our grandmothers would have used to make flour. We now have six guest rooms, each with their own veranda overlooking our small, pretty garden. At mealtimes, we all gather in the dining room to eat together, chatting and sharing life experiences. Our food is home-cooked and made with local veggies; there is always fresh banana and watermelon on offer, as well as mango when it’s in season.
We love nature and sharing this passion with guests, so we invite people to come birding with us in the mornings. There’s a forest nearby where over 100 bird species have been recorded, including beautiful peacocks. As a tour guide, Gopal is happy to show guests around Agra, take them to the spice market and even to play golf. We know a spectacular viewpoint of the Taj Mahal from the River Yamuna that you’ll love. Guests tell us they really enjoy our fantastic location but more than that, they appreciate the homely feel at the Coral Tree – when you stay with us, you become our family members.
