Governors' Camp

The Maasai Mara’s original tented camp

Situated in one of the richest places for wildlife in the Mara this traditional camp is unfenced so grazing animals often pass through.

Governors' Camp's stunning setting was once reserved exclusively for Kenya's colonial governors. Today, it is the largest and most popular of the three Governors’ Mara camps – yet still has only 25 tents to ensure a welcoming atmosphere.

You’ll spend some memorable nights under canvas here. On going to bed you’ll find a hot water bottle waiting for you, and each morning before your first game drive there’ll be a welcome hot drink brought to your tent to ease you into the day. You’ll be allocated an expert driver/guide who you’ll get to know during your game drives and who will know the very best places to spot wildlife, seeking out the likes of lion and leopard. They even know all the local lion by name. The river attracts all kinds of wildlife, from grazing game to elephants, crocodiles and hippos. You’ll may also see the Marsh Pride of lions from the BBC’s Big Cat Diaries, as their territory lies right on the doorstep.

Why we love Governors' Camp

  • From the moment you wake up, you can look out over the Mara from your own private veranda

  • You may see the Marsh Pride of lions, made famous in the BBC’s Big Cat Diaries and BBC Earth's Dynasties

  • Most of the tents have views of the river

  • Governors’ has an eco-friendly ethos that includes a 'zero waste' policy and a 50-year long commitment to local communities

Governors’ Camp has been awarded GOLD Eco Rating from Eco–Tourism Kenya. It recognises that local people must benefit directly from tourism, resulting in a 50 year long commitment to local communities delivering genuine social and conservation results. A zero waste policy means that all of the camp’s waste is sorted and separated then processed for recycling where possible. A programme has also been initiated to use this recycled paper and cardboard to make briquettes to fuel the hot water systems. Governors’ funding for local primary schools includes providing uniforms and paying teachers’ salaries. They have also helped fund construction of classrooms, libraries, bore holes, water towers and tanks, solar power and water purification facilities in local schools. Support is provided for the Narok County Council by supplying equipment and personnel to help with maintenance of local roads and the airstrip. They have helped build a new Health Centre at Mara Rianda for their Masai community neighbours. Governors’ actively re-plants an average of 45 native trees a month to help replace those lost to natural causes such as elephant grazing.

Children of all ages are welcome at Governors' Camp and there are family tents which can accommodate two adults and two children. Cots, high chairs, children's meals and baby sitting can be arranged. Children can join the Mongoose Club and explore with a naturalist, who’ll teach them about the local wildlife and how to identify animal tracks.

Please note the camp is unfenced.
