 Governors' Il Moran

Safari splendour

A truly special safari experience in one of the Maasai Mara’s premier camps.

With a location so incredible it attracts the makers of wildlife documentaries and programmes including the BBC's Big Cat Diary and Planet Earth Live, Governors' Il Moran is the smallest and most luxurious of the three Governors’ tented camps that occupy a wildlife-rich corner of the Maasai Mara. So close to the action are you that, if you’re lucky, you’ll spot an elephant or giraffe wandering through camp, and hear the hippos at night.

Three extended 4x4 game drives with superb knowledgeable guides are included each day, when you’ll venture out into the Maasai Mara National Reserve. You won’t have to travel far to see the Mara’s best wildlife, so can enjoy game drives at leisure, spotting wildlife from the off.

Why we love Governors' Il Moran

  • The exceptional location is often used by wildlife documentary makers

  • As a small luxury camp, the service is attentive and personalised

  • Watch hippos wallowing in the river from your private veranda

  • Governors’ has been working with the local Maasai people for over 50 years, offering support with medical clinics, schools and job training schemes

Governors’ Balloon Flight

Take to the skies on the Governors' hot air balloon safari, where you’ll watch the sunrise over the Maasai Mara and get an aerial view of African wildlife. You’ll lift off around 6am in time to see the sunrise from the balloon, painting the sky in buttery shades of orange.

Community and conservation work in the Maasai Mara

Since Governors’ started over 50 years ago, they’ve been working closely with the local communities around their camps, offering support with education, health and jobs. Your stay  helps to fund projects like local schools, health clinics and conservation programmes. You can also offer support directly by visiting the local Mara Rianda community, who live in a manyatta village of circular huts set around a cattle enclosure. You’ll pay an entrance fee which goes to the Maasai people and has a huge impact on their livelihood. There’s also a chance to shop for traditional beadwork made by local women.

Photographing wildlife in the Maasai Mara

Governors’ Camp has a resident photographer who offers specialist photographic safaris for guests. Although the elephants and lions in the Maasai Mara are beautiful to photograph, it's often the wildlife that you don’t often see, the smaller animals like the jackals and servals that provide interesting pictures.
On the photographic safaris, guests will be given tips on where to take pictures, how to use a 300mm lens to capture the wildlife and how to showcase the differing Mara landscapes.

Cooked breakfasts and lunch buffets are served under giant trees by the river and waiter-served dinner is by candlelight in the dining tent. A beautiful mess tent has been created at the edge of the Mara River with an open fire pit and large sofas to sink into while watching the wildlife below.

What's Included

Lodge Package • Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the dining tent or outdoors (Bush Dinners are extra) • Selected soft drinks, house wine, local beer and spirits • Up to 3 game drives per full day • Laundry • Airstrip transfers • Park fees.

Massages using 100% natural products by the Wild Herb Company are available.

Take to the skies on an early morning hot-air balloon safari and spend your days exploring the Maasai Mara National Reserve on game drives with professional guides. They know the area inside out and have a sixth sense about where to find the animals. Witness the Annual Great Migration (seasonal, usually July to October) and you're not far from the dramatic river crossings.

Governors recognises that local people must benefit directly from tourism, resulting in a 50-year commitment to local communities delivering genuine social and conservation results. Over the years they have funded an eye clinic, a health centre, local schools and supports the Narok County Council by supplying equipment and personnel to help with maintenance of local roads and the airstrip. They have a zero waste policy and use recycled paper and cardboard to make briquettes to fuel the hot water systems and has a tree replanting scheme to replace those lost to natural causes (primarily destructive elephant grazing).

Children over the age of 8 are welcome.

The camp is unfenced.

Game drives may be shared with other guests and private vehicles can be requested at an extra charge.
