Day 1

Arrival in Nairobi

Welcome to Kenya. Upon arrival in Nairobi, a local representative will be waiting at the airport to transfer you to your comfortable hotel. Overnight at Eka Hotel.

Day 2

Nairobi

Today is free to relax and explore the capital city of Nairobi. Choose from an exciting selection of optional activities to create your bespoke family day out. Options include the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, Giraffe Centre, and the Empowering Mothers and Go Granny Go community projects. Overnight at Eka Hotel.

Giraffe Centre, Nairobi

Nairobi

Visit the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi to get up close to endangered Rothschild's giraffes. The centre’s mission is to breed the animals in a safe environment, releasing many into the wild at around three years old, when they can survive on their own. You’ll spend up to an hour at the 60-acre sanctuary in the Lang’ata suburb of Nairobi.

Created by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife, the non-profit centre was founded in 1979 when there were just 130 of these beautiful animals left in the wild. The Rothschild's is a subspecies of the giraffe that lives in East Africa’s grasslands. The centre’s breeding programme started with just two young calves and now they’ve released over 40 giraffes into national parks and conservancies across Kenya. It’s amazing to see the giraffes up close. Afterwards, you can go to the information centre to listen to an educational talk about giraffe conservation and the centre’s work.

Although you’re likely to see giraffes on safari, you can only get this close and personal with them at the Giraffe Centre – it’s quite an experience. It’s great to know that your visit is helping to protect this endangered species. The centre is open throughout the day, so we can arrange your visit at a time to suit you, with private transfers to and from your accommodation.

Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

Nairobi

On this tour you’ll have the chance to meet orphaned elephants at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. The trust was set up over 40 years ago by Daphne Sheldrick in memory of her husband David, who was a famous warden and naturalist in Tsavo East National Park. It has developed into the most successful rescue and rehabilitation programme for elephants in the world, with many of the babies released back into the wild in Tsavo after about three years of rehabilitation.

At around 10.00am you’ll transfer by private vehicle to Nairobi National Park, arriving at the centre for the 11.00am feeding. The elephants know when it’s time to have their milk and come running down into the feeding area. As the keepers feed them, a guide from the trust will introduce you to the individual elephants and tell you their rescue stories. You’ll get to ask questions while the animals play.

Visiting will give you a chance to get up close to the elephants, learn about the wildlife trust’s work and contribute to the conservation of these incredible animals. As well as helping orphaned elephants and rhinos, the trust works on anti-poaching initiatives, habitat protection and runs mobile vet clinics. Following the visit, return to your hotel.

Day 3

Nairobi & Maasai Mara

After breakfast, enjoy a scenic flight by light aircraft to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Your home for the next three nights is an authentic camp set in the heart of this wildlife-rich reserve, where you’ll sleep in a family safari tent. Sarova Mara Game Camp offers a classic safari experience with the comfort of a hotel-style residence. Your plans for the following days are incredibly flexible, with daily games drives accompanied by expert local guides as well as plenty of activities and a kids' club back at camp. Overnight at Sarova Mara Game Camp.

Day 4

Maasai Mara

Wake up to splendid views across the Mara plains and a hearty breakfast in the Isokon restaurant. The Maasai Mara is home to one of the highest concentrations of wildlife in the world and today you’ll begin to discover it. The region is deservedly famous for its big cats but is also a fantastic place to experience other wildlife including elephants, giraffe, zebra, antelope, impala, hyenas and warthogs. It's a joy to see your children learn about and appreciate wildlife and nature on a family game drive around the reserve. Back at camp, The Ozone Rangers Club provides plenty of activities for children and the opportunity for their own exploration into the wild. Overnight at Sarova Mara Game Camp.

Day 5

Maasai Mara

During your stay there’s the opportunity to take a thrilling hot-air balloon safari to gain a whole new perspective of the Maasai Mara. Wake early and watch as the balloon is prepared, then take flight and drift upwards as the sun rises and wildlife roam below. This is our most popular optional experience in Kenya. The rest of the day is spent wildlife spotting on further game drives. Return to camp for a dip in the swimming pool or to unwind at the Tulia wellness tent. Overnight at Sarova Mara Game Camp.

Days 6 to 10

Watamu

With your safari completed it’s time to hit the beach. After breakfast you’ll fly via Nairobi to Malindi on Kenya’s coast to spend the next five nights on the edge of the Indian Ocean. The town of Malindi is well worth a visit to explore the crumbling Gedi Ruins. Dating back to the early 13th century, this once-grand Swahili town is UNESCO-listed. With over 600 species of fish flitting among corals, the Watamu Marine National Park is a veritable paradise for diving and snorkelling.

Day 11

Watamu & Departure

After breakfast, transfer to Malindi Airport for regional flights, or 2 hours to Mombasa Airport for an international flight.
