Shipwreck Lodge

An eco-escape on the Skeleton Coast

Namibia’s Skeleton Coast has a striking landscape where the Atlantic Ocean waves crash into the desert terrain.

Over the years, many ships have been wrecked in the treacherous waters, their relics hauntingly still visible scattered along the shoreline. In 2018, a shipwreck of a different kind emerged with the opening of Shipwreck Lodge. Now guests can experience the dramatic coastline from the comfort of ship-inspired wooden cabins that are spread across the sands.

Whilst this is a place to experience the solitude of Namibia, there are plenty of activities to immerse you into your natural surroundings. Sandboard down the dunes, take a guided beach walk or head out on a sundowner drive.

Why we love Shipwreck Lodge

  • The eco-cabins are designed to look like boats, echoing the shipwrecks on this infamous stretch of coastline

  • You wake up surrounded by Namib Desert dunes, with the Atlantic Ocean infront - it’s the ultimate escape

  • The mornings can be foggy and the sunsets here are amazing - it’s very atmospheric and a photographer's delight

  • On excursions, you may get to see desert lions and elephants and a visit to the Möwe seal colony is a popular activity

Skeleton Coast
Shipwreck Lodge is located in the Skeleton Coast concession between the Hoanib and Hoarusib Rivers
It is 45 kilometres north of Möwe Bay where self-drive guests and fly-in passengers will be met and transferred to the lodge in a closed game drive vehicle

  • Sustainability

The heart of the lodge is the lounge and restaurant where you can relax with fellow guests whilst enjoying fresh seafood overlooking the ocean.

Go sandboarding, join a guided beach walk, take a trip to the Hoarusib Riverbed to see the geological features and end the day with a sunset drive.

Shipwreck Lodge is proud of its eco credentials and has achieved the Green Flower Award for its sustainable practices. Each of the ten chalets is solar powered with a cosy wood-burning stove and can be easily removed, leaving no trace in the desert. When you stay at Shipwreck Lodge, a percentage of your money goes towards protecting the concession area that they are located in, between the Hoarusib and Hoanib rivers in Skeleton Coast National Park.
