Mantis Akagera Game Lodge is perfect for nature lovers seeking luxurious surroundings
Part of a boutique hospitality group founded by the conservationist behind South Africa’s Shamwari Private Game Reserve, Mantis Akagera Game Lodge is a stylish base for exploring Rwanda’s only Big Five national park – itself something of a conservation success story.
Built in 1975 on a ridge overlooking Lake Ihema, the hotel has been renovated from top to bottom, with everything from state-of-the-art solar-power systems and an organic vegetable garden to a clean-cut contemporary interior design. Between game drives, laze on the deck around the generously proportioned swimming pool and soak up the stunning views.
Why we love Mantis Akagera Game Lodge
-
As part of a conservation project, Akagera is the only place in Rwanda where you may see the Big Five
-
You are just a 20-minute drive from Lake Ihema, where you can search for wildlife by boat
-
Bird enthusiasts will love the fact that there are over 500 species to tick off the list, including the prehistoric-looking shoebill
-
Rooms on the first floor are slightly smaller, but have a terrace where early risers can sit and enjoy the glorious sight of sunrise over the park
Facilities
At The Inzovu Restaurant, the focus is on modern African dishes made with seasonal local produce, much of which is from the hotel's own gardens.
Join guided game drives into the park. As well as the Big Five, you may see giraffe, zebra, hippos, baboons and monkeys. A boat cruise on Lake Ihema adds a different dimension to wildlife viewing.
Solar powered water cylinders have been installed and the organic kitchen garden provides many of the ingredients for the restaurant. Mantis also supports a number of local businesses.
