 Cormoran Lodge, Lake Kivu 

Rustic and authentic

This charming wooden lodge sits in a remote hillside spot on the shore of Lake Kivu.

With just a scattering of rustic wooden cabins set in lush tropical gardens on the shores of Lake Kivu, Cormoran Lodge is a restful and intimate retreat. It’s the perfect place to unwind for a day or two between wildlife treks, with suitably low-key, eco-friendly facilities.

There’s a pocket-sized private artificial beach, complete with loungers, where you can dry off between lake swims; a jetty for boat trips if you feel a little more energetic; and a games room where you can play billiards, darts or board games.

The food in the small restaurant is a mix of Rwandan and international dishes cooked fresh to order, with local seafood a speciality. There’s also a cosy bar.

Go trekking in the Kibuye region or take a boat trip on Lake Kivu.

Credit/debit cards can’t be used at Cormoran Lodge – it takes cash only.
