One & Only Nyungwe House

An oasis in the heart of Rwanda’s primate habitat

One&Only Nyungwe House is a luxury nature resort set on a tea plantation at the edge of Africa’s largest mountain rainforest which was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2023.

In a remote spot at the edge of the Nyungwe Forest, this beautiful lodge is an unexpected delight. The décor is sophisticated and modern, but the use of natural materials means that it fits in perfectly with its surroundings. The main lodge has restaurant and bar with a stone fireplace and a boma for relaxed outdoor drinks and dining. Rooms are spacious and modern, housed in six wooden villas, with air-conditioning, television, open fireplace and private terrace overlooking the lush plantation. Two suites have their own villa. After a day trekking with chimpanzees and monkeys, there’s no better place to relax than in the heated infinity pool that looks out over the rainforest, watching the toucans and colobus monkeys in the treetops.

Why we love One & Only Nyungwe House

  • Take a spectacular hikes to track chimpanzees in the park – you might even spot endangered primates like owl-faced monkeys

  • The villa decks overlook the trees where you can sit and watch the mist rolling in while monkeys run around

  • After a day trekking with chimpanzees and monkeys, there’s no better place to relax than in the heated infinity pool that looks out over the rainforest

  • During the cultural evening, performers share traditional dancing and stories about Rwanda

When it comes to food, the concept is fresh, farm-to-table cuisine. As well as the main restaurant and bar, they can organise private dining experiences around the resort, whether you want a table in the tea plantation or to eat on a rainforest deck.

Guests love the opportunity to relax in the spa and heated infinity pool after a long hike. They also offer yoga and mountain biking.

In addition to chimp tracking in the national park, you can enjoy a tea plantation tour and tasting session, nocturnal animal spotting walks and stargazing experiences.

When One&Only took over Nyungwe House in 2018, they gave back the on-site Gisakura tea plantation to the locals, a beautiful symbiosis between them and the community.
