Lemala Ndutu

A front-row seat for the Great Migration

Lemala Ndutu’s seasonal camp puts the thunder of the great wildebeest migration and the unique geology of the Ngorongoro Crater right at your feet.

From December to March, nine safari tents are set up from which to watch the wildebeest on their migration across southern Serengeti. This seasonal base is also a prime spot for the calving and rutting season. Between June and October, the camp moves north to Mara camp, where you may see the migrating herds cross the crocodile-infested Mara River.

The camp and its surrounds unfold like an adventure trail through candle-lit canvas and into the wilderness of the southern Serengeti. There’s the rush of seeing that first lion hunt, the pleasure of dining communally under crystal clear starry skies, a huddle around the campfire and falling asleep to the sound of a late-night roar.

Why we love Lemala Ndutu

  • This mobile camp moves with the migration twice a year to maximise the views of the greatest wildlife show on earth

  • The camps are unfenced and open to the wild, so you’ll see all kinds of animals wandering past and hippos often come in the evenings to graze

  • One of the many Lemala social enterprise projects includes supporting stay-at-home mums who make biodegradable lunch boxes for guests

  • The team taking care of you includes people from the Maasai and Kuria communities, who have a brilliant understanding of the local landscapes, culture and animals

The Serengeti
Lemala Ndutu lies inside the Ngorongoro Conservation area, on the edge of the Serengeti. Set on a permanent marsh under acacia trees and grass, it attracts a large quantity of grazing wildlife. From June to October the camp relocates to the Mara.
It’s a 55-minute light aircraft flight from Arusha Airport to Ndutu Airstrip, followed by a 30-minute drive to camp. At the Mara, the nearest airport is Kogatende, a 40-minute drive from camp.

Dining is communally in the central mess tent which is filled with plumped-up cushions and leather sofas. With early sunshine streaming through, there’s nothing quite like a full English bush breakfast before a day of game driving ahead. They serve an à la carte menu and provide lunch and breakfast boxes for all-day game drives.

Professional guides lead daily game drives, many of which last a full day to see the migration. In the Serengeti, get a bird's eye view on a hot-air balloon safari.
