 Bomani Tented Lodge

A great value safari camp near Hwange

Bomani Tented Lodge is a synergy of community, environment and awesome wildlife.

Bomani Tented Lodge is strategically located on the south-eastern border of the herculean Hwange National Park. On one side lies a 5,000-acre private concession, on the other, rural Matabeleland. This peripheral spot is crucial to the lodge’s community-based ethos and most, if not all, staff hail from the front-line villages closest to the park.

Enjoy daily game drives and even night drives. The guides here are among the best on the continent, specialising in walking safaris. The open-air lounge in the communal area opens up to views of the Bomani Pan and there’s a plunge pool to cool off after days out on safari.

Why we love Bomani Tented Lodge

  • Both authentic and full of character, Bomani Tented Lodge offers you the classic safari setting

  • The camp is completely unfenced so game viewing is almost guaranteed here year-round

  • Unique experiences including the Elephant Express - the lodge's ultimate rail transfer

  • Bomani offers the chance to join in a pump run, a fun activity that involves helping maintain the solar-powered pumps that produce water to a network of pans

3.5 stars
This remote outpost is tucked away in the south-east section of Hwange National Park
It’s a 1-hour flight from Victoria Falls to Bomani’s airstrip or a 4-hour drive. If you’re driving, we recommend stopping at the village of Dete and hopping on Bomani’s Elephant Express railcar to the lodge in the Ngamo Plains – a 2 to 3-hour transfer where you can spot wildlife along the way

Hwange Private Concession Safari

Hwange National Park offers a glimpse into the Africa of old. Its 5,657 square miles still feels wonderfully preserved with that feeling of empty space, few people and animals as far as the eye can see. This sense of exclusivity is powerfully enhanced in the private concession encompassing Bomani Tented Lodge located in the remote south-east part of Hwange.

Wildlife conservation in Hwange National Park

When Ted Davidson, the first warden to work in Hwange National Park, arrived in 1928, you can only imagine his surprise when he discovered there was no reliable surface water available for the wildlife during Hwange’s long dry seasons. During the wet season, the wildlife would flourish but when the rain ceased and the pans dried up, the animals would vanish, migrating to rivers outside the boundaries of the park. Davidson, pressured the colonial authorities to release funding so he could establish year-round waterholes fed by windmills. The wildlife quickly responded and flourished under this new system. Seeing how these pumps sustain wildlife in Zimbabwe's largest park is an interesting activity between safari game drives.
