Brijrama Palace, Varanasi

The palace on the River Ganges

Stay in one of Varanasi’s oldest buildings, which has sat on the banks of the sacred River Ganges since 1812.

Built by the minister of the Nagpur estate, BrijRama Palace is a heritage building made of sandstone and looks like an imposing fort standing guard over the Ganges. Today, the property looks the same as it did 200 years ago, with the addition of some modern features including a spa and fitness centre. The inner courtyard is surrounded with graceful arches; this is where flute players serenade guests in the morning after yoga sessions, it’s a beautiful sound to wake up to.

Other unique experiences include a history walk of the palace and evening folk performances. Guests love sitting on the terrace and watching the ceremonies on the river below. Aside from the two restaurants, multi-cuisine Chota Angan and vegetarian Darbhanga, you can enjoy experiential dining in private areas of the palace with views over the river. Many of the ingredients come from the hotel’s farm in the city.

Why we love Brijrama Palace, Varanasi

  • This former palace took 18 years to renovate with materials sailed in along the Ganges\

  • You can see the enchanting mass of tealights lit at the Ganges aarti ceremony, held a short walk away at Dashashwamedh ghat

  • Head to the Udayan rooftop terrace for wonderful views of the River Ganges

  • The heart of the palace lies in the captivating Bada Aangan, the main atrium. Each evening, its three floors are flooded with live music, creating a magical space for guests to enjoy and socialise

The hotel's restaurant Darbhanga serves traditional vegetarian delicacies in a fine dining style. You can also enjoy a meal on the traditional Bajra, a two-tiered wooden boat that sails down the Ganges.

Therapies at the Kaashi Wellness Spa are inspired by ancient Vedic scriptures. Head to the rooftop where you can take part in yoga and meditation sessions at sunrise.

From its prime location on the ghats, you are just steps from the aarti ceremonies that take place every evening here on the banks of the River Ganges.

Many of the restaurant ingredients come from their farm in the city and they are a zero-waste property so the organic kitchen waste is turned into compost. They have their own treatment plants and a zero-plastic policy.
