An alpine retreat in the heart of the Tasmanian wilderness

On the edge of the spectacular Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park, this hotel is an excellent base for experiencing the rugged nature of Tasmania. Each room is comfortably furnished and has its own small balcony so you can instantly step outside to the sounds and scents of the surrounding wilderness. Wildlife sightings here are common – look out for pademelon, a small marsupial that resembles a miniature kangaroo, and the short-beaked echidna, a timid relative of the platypus with hedgehog-like spines. Deluxe Spa Rooms include a large corner spa bath for a long soak after a day of walking. And staying in the wild certainly doesn’t mean you are restricted with food options. Seasonal dishes at the Altitude Restaurant are beyond what you might expect in a national park, and the Hot Rocks Experience presents Tasmanian tasting plates on a hot stone for a flavour of this wild country.

Avid photographers and artists can look for inspiration in the Wilderness Gallery, with free access for hotel guests to the Tasmanian wilderness beautifully captured in different art forms. Tasmania offers some of the most impressive natural phenomenon in Australia and at Cradle Mountain Hotel, you are in the best place to explore it all. All year round, the nearby Dove Lake is hemmed with forests and mountains which provide ample walking trails from a leisurely meander along the lake to epic alpine tracks for the keenest of walkers.

Front office staff very good. Easy access to Hotel and plenty of parking. It actually snowed while we were there - awesome. Close to Info centre and Devil feeding. We went to the devil feeding - it was fun. The place is really good - looking after the Devils and Quolls. Staff excellent. Unfortunately we had someone on our tour that wanted to show off her knowledge and never stopped asking questions she already knew the answer to. Delayed us quite a bit. Easy drive to Info Centre and walks. Maybe get the Nat Park Pass before you come ? Tip: Check out all of them - the Annual One may be better than a daily one. We used it in a number of places over our 3 week road trip. Shower a tad ordinary but hot. Lovely view out - especially the snow. Hotel brekkie was very good - and the fires around the building. We sat in front of one to have a few drinks and eat our cheese supply. Staff excellent.

Hotel about 5 mins from the park. Friendly and professional staff. Hotel was comfortable and loved the sitting room with a wood fire overlooking the forest. Food was good - both at the bar and the restaurant - amazing pumpkin soup. Pastries were amazing at breakfast.

This place ticked all the boxes, we couldn’t fault it in any way. The rooms were comfortable and clean. There are fireplaces throughout, best being there’s one in each accommodation wing - prefect for a quiet glass of wine after a day’s trekking. The buffet breakfast was faultless - every variety of plant milk you could ask for, as well as a barista on hand (extra charge). The location is perfect as well. Short drive to the Visitor’s Centre where you catch a bus to whichever starting point you desire. 10/10. Would happily return and certainly hope to.
