This historic retreat is the 'grande dame' of the Blue Mountains

This elegant and historic retreat is set on the outskirts of Katoomba, overlooking the magnificent Jamison Valley and close to the Three Sisters. Lilianfels is more like a grand country house than a hotel, and has a very traditional feel. It’s home to the award-winning Darley’s – a fine-dining restaurant steeped in history and serving modern Australian cuisine. Amid the manicured gardens there’s also an indoor and outdoor pool and 89 traditional rooms and suites.

The hotel is in the perfect location for seeing the main blue mountains attractions. If going in to town would recommend getting as is a bit of a walk. The staff are nice and the lobby area is classy. The bed rooms are tired looking now but clean. The wardrobe drawer collapsed like a jenga puzzle but the cleared but it back together. The grounds are nice and pool is nice.

The hotel itself, though a beautiful location and had some pretty gardens, felt shabby and dated. For example, old carpets, yellowed and dirty bathrooms and threadbare towels and sun lounger cushions. It felt like the hotel took any opportunity to charge lots more (for example, when we upgraded our massage from aroma to stress relief, or when we added a three course dinner to Echoes to our package) but the actual experience was quite poor. For example, the massage was no different to a standard relax massage and the service at Echoes was slow. Overall, I’d say the hotel needs to upgrade its facilities and modernise to continue charging these more premium prices.

What a beautiful location and place to stay. The staff were very welcoming and polite. The grounds are beautiful, the indoor pool great (didn't get to the outdoor one). The room is nice, the bathroom a little dated, but the bed was the one let down. It felt old and was not comfortable. This put a little dampener on the weekend away. Breakfast included, buffet style and it was great. All in all a nice place to stay.
