 Bougainvillea Barbados

A charming resort on idyllic Maxwell Beach

Edged by white sands and cerulean sea, this postcard-pretty spot is great for families as well as couples with a kids’ club, spa and three glistening pools.

A spectacular setting and exceptional service make this Mediterranean-style resort an ideal choice for a laid-back escape. The powder-sand, turquoise-lapped beach looks like it’s come straight out of a glossy travel magazine, and the warm waters are perfect for a paddle. Find a shady spot by the main pool and stroll around the waterfalls and rock pools framed by bougainvillea flowers, or take the children to the kids’ club, where you’ll find a wealth of activities and a games room with everything from air hockey to table tennis. St Lawrence Gap, Oistins and Bridgetown are close by too, and a handful of leisurely watersports on the beach will keep itchy-feet types entertained day-long.

Why we love Bougainvillea Barbados

  • It’s ideally located on Barbados’ south coast, with a number of attractions close by and the white-sand Maxwell Beach just steps away.

  • It’s great for families with a range of accommodation types, plus a kids’ club, games room and playground.

  • There are three pools, including an adults-only one, with swim-up bar, for couples after down-time

  • The spa offers an impressive range of Elemis treatments, as well as couples’ massages for those on a romantic getaway.

Bougainvillea Barbados is a member of Pack for a Purpose, encouraging guests to use space in their luggage to bring supplies for the local community. The hotel also supports Variety – the Children's Charity of Barbados, which is dedicated to improving the lives of children who are mentally, physically or socially disadvantaged. The resort’s sustainability aims and objectives include: Minimising resource consumption: encouraging re-use and recycling to minimise waste, promoting and practicing proper solid and liquid waste disposal which includes offsite composting of garden waste, and sorting of waste both in the back and front of house. Committing to community well-being through beautification initiatives and assisting less fortunate members of the community. Using natural resources like solar, renewable energy and captured water effectively and efficiently

We love the family film nights under the stars – they only run at certain times, so ask if there’s one planned when you arrive. The children’s playground is really fun for little ones – it has a mini trampoline plus swings and slides. And there’s a seasonal kids’ club* for children aged 3-12, which runs when there are enough children signed up. The cost for the day includes snacks and lunch.

Junior Suites are ideal for smaller families with a young child or baby – they sleep up to three people, with a pull-out bed in the living area, or a cot which can be requested for free. These have kitchenettes, which are ideal for preparing food or milk for little ones. The One Bedroom and Two Bedroom Suites are best for bigger families as they have either a living room with a pull-out queen sofa bed, or a second bedroom for children. And we recommend the Two Bedroom Beachfront Luxury Suite – which has two bathrooms and a living room – for families up to six.

'Just for kids club' is for 3-12 year olds and offers a variety of activities and games (Mon-Fri, 9.30am-3pm at a cost of US$20 per child, includes snack and lunch). Please note that a minimum of three kids is required for this club to run. Adventure playroom for children under 12 years of age, playground with mini-trampoline, swings and slides. A kids' menu is available at Lanterns.

Minimum stay: 7 nights 21 Dec-02 Jan and 01-29 Feb; 3 nights the rest of the year.

There is a room levy payable locally on departure.

Bougainvillea has retained a sense of boutique charm visit after visit, with a picturesque meandering path from reception straight to Maxwell Beach. Every room I’ve stayed in over the last 4 visits has had a beautiful sea view and nothing can beat the ambience offered from the 2 bed deluxe beach front apartments. The swim up bar offers a relaxed charm, with happy hour between 3:30 - 4:30. However, there is only one operating bar during this time and often only one bar tender - ordering a drink can become a timely affair. Rooms offer reasonable kitchen amenities but don’t come with oven gloves, scissors or a colander. We found the oven to be slow to heat up and the kettle even slower. The hotel gym was a disappointment for me, with very old equipment which is in need of an upgrade; the dumbbells and pull up bar are rusty in places and ultimately do not make for a motivating exercising experience. Live music is on offer each evening, including guitar and saxophone, singing and steel pan. Mondays evenings offer a free drink during the manager’s welcome - although the manager was nowhere to be seen when I visited. Overall, I’d highly recommend this hotel.

This hotel is good in parts. Great position on the beautiful Maxwell beach . Nice rooms, well maintained by the friendly staff unfortunately very few rooms have a true sea view and there are no complimentary beverages in the rooms. There are no lifts, so if you can't deal with stairs, ask for a ground floor room. Nice small pools that seem child friendly and plenty of beach sunbeds and umbrellas serviced by a friendly water sports group. Food is a high standard in the only restaurant, but the menu is fixed, which can be a bit monotonous if, like us, you are there for 14 nights. The restaurant staff are very friendly and helpful but be aware, there is loud music next to the restaurant in the evening which makes it hard to have a conversation over dinner. There is a pool bar with great staff. We did find a problem getting room faults corrected during the stay. TV in the bedroom didn't work for the first week. Turns out, it needed a Google TV box. The phone was faulty, and it took them 12 days to fix it, in spite of repeatedly reporting it. Checkout is 11.00, so if you have a later flight, you will be hanging around the lobby for hours. One major fault is that there is only a single public toilet in the lobby and only one to cover the beach and restaurant. Overall, it is a nicely positioned hotel, but the single, noisey dining option means it's not a true four star facility, and we would not choose it in future. That may be something to do with us being in our late seventies.
