 Kolbe Hotel Rome

Wrap yourself in history

A 17th-century former Franciscan convent, this hotel is surrounded by relics of ancient Rome.

Away from Rome’s grand Baroque centre sits this charming hotel with its pretty orange and lemon grove gardens, which are a real rarity in the Italian capital. The hotel is surrounded by the remains of imperial Rome, and you couldn’t be better placed if you want to immerse yourself in the ancient history of the city. The hotel overlooks the ruins of the Palatine Hill, while the Colosseum, the chariot racing stadium Circus Maximus and Piazza Venezia are located just a short walk away. The more ‘modern’ sights can be reached by a short taxi ride or metro journey. The style of the hotel itself has a more 21st-century feel to it with exposed brick walls, glass doors and contemporary furnishings.

Why we love Kolbe Hotel Rome

  • If you’re in the Italian capital to explore its Roman past, you couldn’t be better placed as it’s right next to the Forum

  • When you’re sitting in the sun-kissed garden surrounded by citrus and olive trees, it’s hard to believe you’re in a busy city

  • The cool modern interior design – think clean lines and sleek designer furniture – fits perfectly with the historic architecture

  • With a cosy vaulted room for winter and the shaded garden in summer, the well-regarded restaurant has year-round appeal

The first meal of the day is served in the light-filled breakfast room or out on the patio; the dishes are largely continental with eggs and bacon also available. The Unique Al Palatino Garden Restaurant has both indoor and outdoor spaces, the latter of which has the real top tables. The quality of the cuisine certainly matches the beautiful setting with delicious Italian dishes on the menu served at dinner.

Unique Al Palatino Garden Restaurant
Each morning breakfast is served in the relaxing indoor space, or on the terrace if the weather is warm and dry. At dinner the restaurant opens its doors again for a rich offering of Italian dishes.

Lounge Bar
Sharing the historic vaults of the building with the restaurant, this the place for pre and post-dinner drinks.

There are very few, if any, hotels in the Italian capital that can boast their own garden, let alone a restaurant that makes the best use of such a beautiful outdoor space which is what makes Unique Al Palatino Garden Restaurant rather special.

We enjoyed our stay at the Kolbe Hotel. The location is excellent. The staff were helpful and friendly, especially Omar at the Front Desk. We asked for an iron and ironing board, and they were brought to our room within five minutes. The breakfast items in the restaurant are varied and plentiful, with many delicious choices - one of the nicest included breakfasts I have ever seen at a hotel. The garden is beautiful. Our room was clean, and the linens immaculate. The hotel provided good quality soaps and shampoos. The view of the garden was lovely. The only thing I did not like was the stained and worn carpet in the room, and the staircase in the room that had sharp edges and took up soooo much space in the rather small room. It led to what once was a loft, but which is now walled in. Why haven't they removed the staircase? The luggage rack was under this staircase, as was the desk, and we kept banging our heads on the sharp risers of the staircase. The presence of the staircase to nowhere left no room for luggage, except for one piece on the luggage rack underneath it. I was surprised that the hotel lets this go (the rug and the staircase) when they have put attention and care into other details. Thus the four star instead of the five star review.

Very friendly staff and immaculately kept. Rooms of very high quality and the hotel is not too far from major attractions. Overall, very good experience.

Lovely little hotel, close to most of the main attractions… Clean, friendly, serves great food! If you need anything just ask… We missed having tea and coffee facilities in our room. We asked for an Iron and it was with us within minutes… Would stay again!
