Terra Nostra Garden Hotel
Where you can bathe at midnight in bubbling hot springs
An elegant retreat on the edge of an 18th-century garden with a geothermal pool and a host of rare plants.
Framed by towering trees and on the fringes of an historical botanical garden, Terra Nostra is renowned for its rare camellia collection and huge geothermal pool filled with iron-rich volcanic waters. The wellness club features a large indoor pool and the restaurant focuses on award-winning wines and local Azorean ingredients.
Why we love Terra Nostra Garden Hotel
-
Bathe day or night in the geothermal pool where hot springs stay at a steady 40°C.
-
24-hour access to the park with its Eden-style gardens and hidden grottoes.
-
Traditional Azorean dishes are slow-cooked underground in volcanic steam.
-
You’re in a hot location, literally sitting on Furnas Valley’s dormant volcanic crater.
This resort has earned internationally recognised certification that conform to standards set by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
Rooms
The hotel’s history and setting are reflected in the Art Deco-style design of the 86 rooms, with leafy motifs and an earthy palette of greens and browns. The Standard Art Deco Rooms in the original wing are compact and welcoming, but for a private balcony and a more appealing view, we suggest upgrading to a Garden View Room or the larger Superior Garden View Room. There’s an inviting terrace with the Deluxe Garden View Rooms. Finally, there are the Suites, where you have two sitting areas indoors.
Facilities
Some of the dishes in the stylish restaurant are cooked in a thermal spring, while the ingredients used both here and in the all-day bar and lounge are local, seasonal and super-fresh, giving the food an extra dose of healthy deliciousness.
TN Restaurant
With an authentic local focus, from the sourcing of ingredients to the way in which they're cooked, team your meal with something from the wine list, which is regarded as one of regional Portugal’s best.
The Gardener
It’s hard to imagine anywhere more restful than the sprawling terrace at The Gardener, where you’re completely enveloped in greenery. Come here to while away a few hours over anything from a simple, light lunch to an indulgent afternoon tea or evening drinks and tapas.
At the TN Restaurant, feast on Azorean beef, just-caught seafood or, most typical of all, a traditional Furnas Cozido stew slow-cooked to perfection using natural volcanic heat

The signature treatments in the aptly named on-site Wellness Place, with its naturally heated pool and spa baths, incorporate everything from volcanic hot stones to Azorean plant-based products. But it’s the 24-hour access to the park, sometimes straight from your private terrace, that makes Terra Nostra Garden Hotel unique. Here, you can wind your way through camellia plantations, seek out hidden grottos and try a spot of ‘forest bathing’ in the shade of mature red cedars, or relax in the iron-rich, rust-tinted geothermal waters of the outdoor pool.
Guests of the hotel have complimentary access to the Terra Nostra Garden. Dating back to 1775, you can walk down the Avenue of Ginkgo Biloba or see the camellia collection with some plants over 100 years old. Further afield you can explore the Gorreana Tea Plantation and the caldera lakes.
The hotel has Travelife Gold certification for sustainability in accommodation. They take action to minimise their environmental impact, safeguard biodiversity, support fair labour and help their local community.
