With its chic design, scented gardens and atmospheric spa, this luxe hotel is a grown-up retreat in the heart of the city.
Part listed monument, part art installation, Hospes Palacio del Bailío is a cultural attraction in its own right in a place not short on them. This graceful manor house, built between the 16th and 18th centuries on the site of a Roman villa, has been updated with real flair, the sort that teams ancient stonework, futuristic designer light shades and reimagined al-Andalus-style horseshoe arches and pulls it off. Once through the discreet entrance - an elegant carriage gateway into a paved courtyard - it won’t be long before the serene atmosphere created by everything from the soft light of the marble-floored corridors to the rustle of greenery from the garden has you under its spell. The thought that has gone into every element means that picking a highlight will be down to personal taste.
Why we love Hospes Palacio del Bailío
-
Gazing at Roman ruins below the restaurant’s glass floor while sipping the first coffee of the day.
-
We love the creative fusion of food created by Chef Rubén González.
-
The glorious garden is filled with citrus and avocado trees, sturdy palms and the scent of jasmine and has a pretty outdoor swimming pool in a sheltered corner of it.
-
The Bodyna Spa, with its subterranean thermal suite of Roman baths and a menu of rituals and treatments designed to leave you floating on air.
Rooms
In the 51 rooms and suites, all unique, there’s the same seamless blend of original features and contemporary design touches that’s such a feature of the public areas. There might be a vaulted or painted ceiling, a horseshoe arch or an ornately carved wooden door, perhaps. There will most definitely be clean-lined modern furniture, velvet headboards with a Moorish flavour, and a neutral palette that goes from off-white to earthy bronze, including in the sleek, marble-lined and up-to-the-minute bathrooms. And that’s the case whether you’re in a lead-in Dreamer’s, a slightly larger Deluxe and Deluxe Garden View room or a roomier-still Junior Suite, some of which are impressively spacious.

My boyfriend and I stayed at 6 lovely hotels throughout Spain and Portugal, and this hotel was a favorite. From the moment you enter, the staff was warm and welcoming. From the beautiful room, to the peaceful courtyard and incredible views of the Roman ruins, we couldn’t have been happier with our stay. We enjoyed the delicious breakfast, massages in the spa, and yummy cocktails in the courtyard. All of the sights, shopping and restaurants were within walking distance. We wished we could have stayed longer!

Our second stay at this beautiful hotel. Loved our room, spacious and clean. The breakfast buffet is amazing and we had a lovely evening meal in their restaurant. It's located in a very quiet area, a short walk from the centre and we felt very safe walking around the quiet streets. When we checked in the hotel reception was extremely busy. We felt in the way most of the time. No welcome drink was offered and no recommendations for the surrounding areas. As this was our second visit this was not a problem but it would have been a shame if this was your first experience/stay. Would still highly recommend.

What a beautiful hotel, the gardens, the decor! The staff were wonderful. We loved breakfast on a plexiglass floor above Roman ruins. Not so enchanted by the breakfast buffet, but to be fair, we were too lazy to order off the menu. We stayed in Dreamer’s room 15 that was an interior room, very quiet with comfy king size bed. It did take awhile for the water to heat in the shower. We reserved a free soaking in the Roman baths although I remained in the hot tub part. The hotel’s location was in a quiet area, 15-20 minutes walk to the main part of the historical center. The streets felt very safe. The hotel restaurant was quite expensive, so we ate at local places along the way. This was a great base for touring the city.
