Gili Lankanfushi

Casually lavish. Sustainably sublime.

Serene and intimate, this island is the epitome of Robinson Crusoe-style luxury.

Cleverly blending desert island vibes with luxury touchpoints in one of the Maldives’ largest lagoons, Gili Lankanfushi is an away-from-it-all hideaway with just 45 overwater villas. The dining options are impressive and creative, and there’s plenty to do aside from the usual snorkelling and diving, with the opportunity to learn to surf on the nearby breaks or take a traditional cookery class.

Why we love Gili Lankanfushi

  • The colourful organic garden supplies the kitchen with fresh herbs and green veg

  • The largest stand-alone overwater villa in the world is here, a sprawling 1,700m2 with its own spa, cinema, and waterslide

  • An extensive renovation in late 2019 completely refreshed the resort

  • This is one of the most sustainably minded resorts in the Maldives with an impressive roster of eco-credentials

Super fresh food, with many fruits and veg sourced from the resort’s own organic garden, make dining at Gili Lankanfushi a favourite part of staying here.

Kashiveli
The sand-floored a la carte restaurant gives the feel you haven’t left the beach, but the excellent menu belies such casualness – food is absolutely fresh and utterly fabulous.

By the Sea
In perhaps the prettiest setting anywhere for a Japanese fine-dining restaurant, By the Sea has an impressive menu delivered by skilled chefs.

Overwater Bar
Open from lunch to late, head to the rejuvenated Overwater Bar with its rustic-chic vibes for quick and fresh bites and coconut martinis.

Fini Foni
Ice creams, popsicles, and delicious cocktails. Fini Foni is your go-to for summery refreshments.

Underground Wine Cellar
Glass steps lead down to a treasure trove of over 500 wines.

Dining experience
Dine in private locations around the resort, including on the beach or in the organic garden.

Choosing an icy treat from Fino Foni is likely to become a daily ritual.

Drawing on ancient healing practices from around the world, the treatments at Meera Spa are designed to soothe and promote balance. Set over the water in light and airy treatment rooms, there are panoramas to admire when you’re not in deep relaxation. Complimentary yoga is available every day at sunrise.

A fitness centre and tennis court complement a wide variety of water sports.

A PADI-certified dive centre offers courses for beginners and trips to nearby dive sites. There’s the option to join a science dive to help collect vital ecological data.

A selection of surfing programmes is available in addition to a wide array of other water sports. Try guided snorkelling, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, catamaran sailing, or paddle boarding.

An infinity pool overlooking the beach serves as a central social point to the resort.

The resort rehabilitates the coral reef by nursing coral on ropes and transplanting them onto degraded reef areas. A heat recovery system is used to recycle heat produced by the island’s generators.

Thoughtful architectural design and passive cooling allow for natural ventilation and reduce the need for air-conditioning. Responsible purchasing minimises packaging and waste with refillable dispensers in the villas.

Waste is separated and recycled where possible and organic waste is composted for use in the resort gardens and water-saving devices are used wherever appropriate. Wastewater is collected, treated onsite and recycled for irrigation and the resort desalinates water with an efficient reverse-osmosis system.

Minimum stay: 5 nights 25 Dec-01 Jan.

Gili Lankanfushi reopens in Dec 2019.
