Arriving at Maniumpathy in Colombo’s Cinnamon Gardens district is a step back in time. You’ll enter the hotel through its grand entrance and be greeted by vintage-style furnishings, Jaffna touches, and a historic ambience.
Maniumpathy has a distinctly residential feel. After all, this former family home has just seven bedrooms. It’s in one of the city’s smartest neighbourhoods, and while it’s on a relatively busy road, there’s a sense of calm about Maniumpathy, making it a particularly lovely spot to return to after busy days in the city.
Why we love Maniumpathy
-
Former guests rave about the food. All bases are covered whether you’re hankering after a fragrant Sri Lankan curry or some indulgent comfort food
-
There’s a splendid freshwater pool set in gardens. The scattered seating and loungers beckon for a quiet afternoons after busy city mornings
-
The guestrooms are richly decorated, and each is named after a woman from the family that has lived at the property over five generations
-
You’re well-placed for city explorations. Maniumpathy is close to Victoria Park, and exploring nearby on foot is easy
Rooms
The seven guestrooms are each a little different from the next but fall broadly into three categories: Master, Deluxe, and Ultra. Size and location are the main differentiators, so it’s worth considering if you’re happy with a balcony or would prefer your room to open onto a private courtyard. The colours and design across the rooms vary slightly, but there are features they all share, such as timber-framed beds, and modern must-haves like Bluetooth speakers, bedside charging, and twice-daily housekeeping.
Facilities
The Verandah is where you have most of your meals, from patio breakfasts to candlelit dinners. There’s a bistro feel to it, with its marble-topped tables and café-style chairs, and the quality of the food is excellent. Guests are blown away by the presentation and flavours served up.

A lovely al fresco restaurant set beneath Ehela trees. It is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Coffee and pastries are also available all day
The Cigar Room
