Beautifully restored tea factory in the Nuwara Eliya hills.
From the moment you arrive you’ll be swept up in the history of the Heritance Tea Factory which is part hotel, part museum. Original features are still on display within this incredible building which was transformed into a hotel amid rolling hills covered in tea. During a stay here you can really immerse yourself in your destination by plucking your own tea and watching its journey through the mini tea factory; enjoying a fine dining experience in a restored train carriage; and of course, partaking in that most British of traditions – high tea. We recommend spending two nights here on your tailor-made Sri Lanka itinerary.
Why we love Heritance Tea Factory
-
It’s not just a hotel, it’s an immersive experience that will give you an insight into life on a tea estate in colonial times
-
You can try a fascinating tea-picking experience that takes you from picking to packing the final product as a special memento
-
There’s a great range of unique dining venues, from a former sifting room to a charming old railway carriage
-
Where better to graze your way through a good old-fashioned afternoon tea than on a long-established tea plantation?
This resort has earned internationally recognised certification that conform to standards set by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
Rooms
All 50 rooms and suites have beautiful views out over the hills of the Hethersett plantation and an old-world style with dark wood furnishings and beams. You can choose from the Superior or more spacious Premium Rooms or opt for an Executive Floor Deluxe which is located on the highest floor of the hotel and has the services of a butler. Junior Suites and the glorious Flowerdew Suite are also available.
We think it’s worth upgrading to a Premium Room for the extra space and the scenic views on two sides.
Facilities
The characterful main restaurant is supplemented by a selection of dining experiences, while one of the two bars also has an all-day menu of light bites.
We love the various private dining options, which include breakfast in the maze and high tea Sri Lankan-style in the topiary garden.
Dining on Wheels
For a special evening you can have dinner in an old train carriage, which would once have been used to transport tea from the factory, and enjoy butler service and a culinary journey through six ‘stations’.
Hethersett Bar
The factory’s former packing room is now a warm and welcoming venue for an early-morning cup of tea, an afternoon snack or a late-night drink and cigar.
Goatfell Bar
Tea in every possible variety is the order of the day at this special bar. You can come here from 7am to 10pm to unwind with a traditional blend or something more exotic and to buy a packet of your favourite to take home.
Kenmare
The beautiful main restaurant was the sifting room of the old factory, and offers local and international options at breakfast, lunch and dinner (buffet or à la carte).
We love the original features and clever touches such as the rows of tea crates used as serving stations at Kenmare.

The hotel’s Misty Mountain Spa offers Asian-inspired treatments with a holistic flavour, featuring Diviyan Spa’s all-natural ethically sourced products. Come here for a soothing, nourishing ritual such as Serenity or Satin Skin from one of the skilled Balinese therapists.
The fitness room has treadmills, exercise bicycles, a multigym and free weights. Guests can also head out on guided hikes or bicycle rides or test their skills on the putting green.
Try tea plucking, go for a trek in the surrounding countryside, keeping an eye out for some of the native birds. Further afield, you can also visit landmarks including St Clair's Falls, Mahakudugala Peak and the Sita Eliya Temple.
The spa products are made exclusively from organically grown natural ingredients, from nut oils to herbal extracts. Almost three-quarters of the staff are local, and nearby villages have benefitted from a house-building scheme. Hot water is supplied by a combination of solar panels and heat pumps. Around 80% of the wastewater is recycled and reused on the hotel’s gardens and lawns.
There’s a kids’ play park and lots of board games, a children’s menu in the main restaurant, and activities suitable for the whole family.
Compulsory Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve gala dinners, supplements apply.
The Dining on Wheels experience is currently closed for restoration.
