 Wild Glamping Gal Oya

More than just a place to sleep

An out of the ordinary travel experience made extraordinarily easy. On the edge of wilderness, this is off-grid glamping for adventurous souls who want to leave just a gentle footprint.

If you fantasise about ditching the tech (there’s no Wi-Fi or mobile reception here) and switching the commute for a route that leads to a nirvana-quiet mountain village paradise, here’s your chance. On a 30-acre farm in Rathugala, home to the indigenous Vedda people, you’ll swim with views of dove-white misty mountains and drift off to sleep under iluk grass roofs. Your open-air ‘tents’ have all the creature comforts you need whilst still feeling nomadic. Food, sourced from the farm or freshly lake-caught, is some of the finest we’ve tasted in Sri Lanka. Seeing the greats of the animal kingdom in Gal Oya National Park is like winning a golden ticket as is walking through the jungle with a Vedda guide revealing the secrets of medicinal forests.

Why we love Wild Glamping Gal Oya

  • The perfect antidote to a busy life. There’s no better medicine than Mother Nature.

  • Spending golden hour, in the morning and evening, on a boat safari in nearby Senanayake Samudraya. If you’re lucky, you’ll see herds of elephants swimming between the islands.

  • Breakfast with views of the Gal Oya summits. Yes please. How about dinner too? It’s pure magic here.

  • Soaking up the spiritual heritage of the indigenous Vedda people with guided jungle walks, mantras and sacred dance rituals. Incomparable experiences.

We’ve been here first-hand and can tell you that the food is fabulous. The on-site restaurant serves its bounty fresh from farm and lake. In-house chefs cook up a storm both Sri Lankan style and international. And it wouldn’t be Wild Glamping Gal Oya without some imaginative gourmet experiences. You can learn how to cook indigenous dishes from the Veddas and try your hand at agriculture by helping out on the organic farm.
