 Malabar Hill

No mistaking the feel good vibes here

The mood at Malabar is barefoot bohemian hideaway meets Vogue. On the south coast, between jungle and ocean, it’s meditation, margaritas and designer villas with private pools.

This is where the cool crowd come for scenery, sunbathing and sweet dreams. It strikes a chord with couples wanting privacy and is a fab spot for R&R as part of a longer Sri Lankan trip. The guys who own Malabar Hill are lovers of the environment and architecture. This place teems with design details - Rajasthani furnishings, Indonesian sukabumi tiles, chairs crafted by artisan carpenters - and riffs of the royal touch. Albeit a royal who likes to sip Malabar bloody marys. Each mouse-quiet villa (there are only 14) teeters on the hill and with one slide of a door you’ll dive into your own private pool. The main pool - about six times the length of a giraffe - is as serene as the private yoga and meditation sessions. If you fancy it, you can wake up to a floating breakfast and for dinner, pad over to lantern-lit open-sided Hill House for string hoppers and seafood platters.

Why we love Malabar Hill

  • This place does a wonderful job of relaxing you into the island spirit.

  • There’s a free shuttle service to the hotel’s private haven on Mirissa beach, The Shack.

  • Go for slow-like-honey days with bike rides, cooking lessons and wave catching on Weligama beach or pack in activities.

  • You feel a million miles from anywhere watching the sun set over jungle and ocean on The Terrace. Whiskey sour optional but dreamy.

There are beautiful panoramic views of treetops and ocean from the restaurant, bar and terrace. Menus are balanced and innovative.

Expect seafood platters, mezze, tofu bowls and burgers, and drinks sparkle; mocktails, cocktails, smoothies, juices, Champagne, beers and a fab selection of teas.

All meals can be ordered straight to your room for convenience but you won't wan to miss out on the spectacular views and atmosphere at the Restaurant.

Restaurant
Hill House restaurant is a magical pavilion nestled in the treetops. The design, sustainable and stylish, is Indian Moors in style. The views are exotic and the food - Sri Lankan meets the Med - is superb.

Bar
The bar, a handcarved arc, is the social hub of Malabar Hill. Views (again) vino and vitality juices. Scroll the menu and find everything from morning zingers of carrot and ginger to coffees, king coconuts and classic cocktails.

Terrace
Pad on over here for a seat with a side of sunset cocktails and killer views. Or wake up early for juice and linger all afternoon. The Terrace is also the spot for pre-dinner drinks and sharing platters. Open-air, balmy and just right.
