 Tabula Rasa Resort & Spa

Suite retreat among the coconuts

Feel gently removed from the rest of the world at this canopy-skimming Dutch-owned boutique hotel up in the hills. Welcome to the jungle.

It’s calm and cool up in the hills and among the coconut trees at Tabula Rasa. The only giveaways that a hotel exists in this forest of fairytale green are a few terracotta roofs and the bright blue of an infinity pool peeking through the trees. To spend time at this Small Luxury Hotel of the World is a reminder of the beauty of nature. Say ‘ayubowan’ (hello) to the sun from a tropical terrace cleaved into jungle, cycle village-style paths to a symphony of birds and monkeys and take a tuk tuk down to the hotel’s private cabanas on the beach. Each of the 24 rooms is equipped with binoculars for wildlife spotting, suites feature private plunge pools, villas have views that reach to the ocean, and if you’re bringing the kids (we recommend this place for teens rather than tinies) there are brilliant two bedroom family apartments.

Why we love Tabula Rasa Resort & Spa

  • There’s sunrise yoga serenaded by birds and lobster suppers surrounded by the hum of the forest.

  • Jungle rejuvenation at the spa with a coconut body scrub and green tea ritual.

  • Upgrade to a plunge pool suite for a sky-high private dip or the new Emerald Suite for a luxury jungle experience.

  • You’re on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, never far from white sand beaches, natural pools, snorkelling and swimming with turtles.
