Get out and explore New Zealand’s captivating capital from this quirky harbourside base.

This new waterfront bolthole is in an excellent spot, at the heart of the action in Wellington’s Oriental Bay neighbourhood. It’s a quick stroll from the Te Papa Tongarewa National Museum and only a 20-minute walk from the city’s cable car. The style here is eccentric but high-quality, most obviously in the guest rooms; the mid-20th-Century furnishings and leather chairs contrast wonderfully with the sizeable, glistening bathrooms. The spacious front-facing Suite has large windows, a deck and lovely views over Waitangi Park, the city and the marina. All rooms come with air-conditioning, TV, minibar and Wi-Fi.

On the ground floor of the hotel you’ll find Duppa Bar, named after the first resident of the bay, George Duppa before the founding of Oriental Bay. There are no photos of Mr Duppa on record but the hotel have incorporated a sketch of him into their logo; head down here to enjoy breakfast, tapas, a selection of drinks and Wellington’s famous coffee.

The Ohtel Hotel (fun name, eh?) is our go-to place to stay in Wellington for a holiday while we're visiting our kids in New Zealand. It's a unique experience: it's very small, therefore with very personal, friendly service; the location is great, a long block from Te Papa at the beginning of Oriental Bay; the midcentury modern rooms are tasteful with good views of the harbor; the lobby has a sweet, limited food service. The staff are great. We just made a reservation for our daughter and husband to stay here.

Lovely boutique hotel in a great waterfront location, walkable to city sights, proximate for airport commute, excellent service and pleasant staff. One additional bonus was the dog-friendly room policy (which is hard to find in NZ) - we will definitely book again!

This is very much a boutique hotel, quite different from a modern chain. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Our room was very large with a wonderful bathroom. There was an extensive sitting area with a table and chairs if you wanted to bring a meal back to the room. It is located just off the waterfront at Oriental Bay, just south of the CBD. There are wonderful walks along the water in both directions and Mt Victoria is close by, offering some active walks and a great 360 degree view. There are plenty of good restaurants nearby as well as a supermarket.
