Boschendal

Farming with a purpose

Established in 1685, Boschendal is one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa.

Cape Dutch manor houses are set in 1,800 hectares of private land with deep community roots and a pioneering approach to regenerative farming which you can learn about on a guided tour.

Accommodation is all self-catering with a farm shop at hand offering fresh ingredients that can be stocked in your fridge on arrival (on request) and a deli restaurant offering casual all-day dining.  No visit to Boschendal would be complete without tasting their award-winning wines at the Cellar Door.

The Werf restaurant serves up farm-to-fork fare including signature grass-fed black Angus steak accompanied by seasonal sides from the Werf Food garden. During the summer months (October to May) you can picnic on the lawns from hampers full of fresh farm produce and year-round you can taste award-winning wine at the Cellar Door.

Aside from wine tasting, you can explore the estate on foot, by bike or horseback. Take a tour of the farm and learn about their sustainable gardening practices or browse the exhibits at the Boschendal X Brundyn art gallery.

Of the 1,800 hectares, around 800 are dedicated to conservation where they’ve restored river flows and allowed the flora and fauna to flourish undisturbed. They are pioneering regenerative farming that doesn’t just sustain the soil but strategically replenishes it by nourishing the soil with live roots, planting indigenous and diverse crops, and encouraging their livestock – cows, sheep and chickens – to freely graze and essentially sequester carbon into the earth. They also support their local community and those who work on the estate can send their children to the pre-school located on the farm. They also regularly run supplies to the neighbouring educational centres.

For families, children aged 4 to 12 years can play in the Tree House Playground or try out supervised activities such as foraging, mud craft and gardening with chickens. For older children there is a mountain biking pumping track.
