One of Malaysia’s most famous hotels, the ‘E&O’ radiates style in a fantastic setting.
Many cities around the world have that one hotel that’s steeped in history and evokes memories of a bygone era. Singapore has Raffles and Rangoon has The Strand, while in Penang’s vibrant capital Georgetown, it’s the Eastern & Oriental Hotel. The hotel is split into two beautiful buildings – the Heritage Wing with a stylish waterfront pool and the modern Victory Annexe with a sleek sixth-floor pool. Expect vintage cocktails at Farquhar’s Bar and English afternoon tea at Palm Court.
Why we love Eastern & Oriental Hotel
-
Luxurious Heritage Wing Suites come evening canapes and drinks.
-
Victory Annexe Corner Suites feature large balconies and claw and ball baths.
-
It’s a five-minute walk to George Town’s colonial villas, Chinese houses and rainbow of street art.
-
You’re in one of Asia’s best street food destinations.
Rooms
The 232 suites at E&O are stylishly designed with a mix of modern and light tones, antique furnishings, natural wood floors and partially marble bathrooms. Some of the suites, such as the Deluxe and Premier Suites, overlook the Straits of Malacca, while others like the George Town Suites have city views. We love the vintage-style roll top baths and more heritage vibes in the Straits Suites and Writers Suites. Over in the Victory Annexe are the Studio Suites, which have a balcony overlooking the water, and the dual-aspect Corner Suites.

With classic dishes on offer complemented by selected wines.
The classy Palm Court is open each day for casual international dishes and tastes of Malaysia. A traditional afternoon tea is served here daily from 3pm to 5pm. The cosy Planters Lounge is situated on the sixth floor of the Victory Annexe and is open for casual all-day dining. The final venue at the E&O is Farquhar’s Bar, a classically decorated cocktail bar located by the lobby in the Heritage Wing. On Wednesday to Saturday, you can head here in the evening for pre- and post-dinner drinks and views out over the waterfront.

From arrival we felt unwelcome, no one help with the luggage and there are 5-6 front desk staff however was not being acknowledged. Waiting for a group and close to ten mins to my turn. Unfortunately we arrived at the wrong wing. We were pointed towards the exist and walk for 1 min to another wing. Which I believe a 5 star prestigious hotel like Easter child have at least walks us or assist with luggage service to another wing. Room was spacious which we like separate living room and bed room large marble washrooms. On the negative site TV were too small and doesn’t fit to the elegant theme or large room that we have. Called for ice and waited for close to 30 mins to delivered, when we did a second call operator mentioned that “oh you have not received? I call again” ice bucket come without a tongs and underlined which I have to use my hand to scout the ice. Happy to tour around the hotel with lots of history and antique. When I arrived at Cornwallis lounge 4-4:30pm thinking of have a coffee or tea, service seems unwelcoming, only mention “yes sir” 2 of them was using phone next to the bar and 2 dirty table with dirty glasses was unattended. Feel unwelcome again which we left and thinking if the lounge is open? Walking around the hotel is like in the museum knowing the history for 140 years old establishment. Having rich history I believe there is no history tour about the hotel which can be further understand Eastern & Oriental Hotel. Breakfast service was good, however we saw a live cockroaches next to the buffet line which make us lost appetite and not sure if the food served up to clean and hygiene standard. Upon check out I would like to thank Ananth from bell/door man assist with my luggage. Overall satisfaction and experience was bad and unpleasant. Probably the worst to be one of the best hotel in Penang. If is a three star hotel paying 30% lesser of the room rate I’m happy with the service. But the other way we wanted to experience the luxury paying more but get nothing from what should be enjoyed.
