Courtyard by Marriott King Kamehameha's Kona Beach Resort
Occupying an historic location in the heart of quaint Kona, from where Hawaii’s most famous king once ruled, this straightforward hotel is an alternative to the big resort hotels further north, and a convenient base from which to explore the island.
Honestly, there’s not much that’s exciting about the hotel, but as one of the town’s key landmarks all the local highlights are steps away. Wandering out on foot you can visit neighbouring Kona Brewing Co.’s popular local brewhouse for a tasting beer flight. As good as it is, don’t buy takeaways to bring any home as you can buy it in Waitrose these days! One thing you definitely should bring home is some excellent locally grown and roasted Kona Coffee. Wandering the quaint village centre, you’ll find numerous cafes and gift shops stocking it, it’s expensive but widely regarded as the best coffee money can buy. On a warm day, an iced Kona coffee is a delight. By car it’s a two hour scenic drive to Volcanoes National Park. The hotel leans into its historical setting, with impressive Hawaiian art works and appropriate island-styling. Rooms are comfortable and cosy and have balconies, so upgrading to an ocean view should be considered. There’s a welcoming pool and small beachfront with activities for those who are inclined. Naturally, there’s a restaurant and a daytime bar and grill by the pool, but the stand-out is the Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice – a local institution.
