Just back from Thailand

Sipping Mai Tais by the Andaman Sea, stepping into incense-swirled temples and feasting on food that’s a flavour bomb — Thailand is a sensory adventure that leaves its mark.

A few Kuoni experts have just returned from an unforgettable trip, flying with our award-winning airline partner Eva Air. From bucket-list-worthy pool villas to the most mouthwatering food and hidden islands you can’t skip, here’s what they loved most.

Banyan Tree Krabi

Setting the scene: beach-hopping bliss

The team experienced a whirlwind of luxury, laid-back vibes and authentic culture as they hopped between Thailand’s dramatic islands and beaches on the southwest coast. Private transfers, long-tail boats and speedboats whisked them from the emerald waters of Krabi to the soft shores of Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi and Phuket, with a detour to Koh Jum – an offbeat isle that’s still a well-kept secret.

The highlights: through our experts’ eyes

We asked our jet-setting travel experts – Keelin, Jared, Jo, Katie and Louis – to share their thoughts on different aspects of the trip. Memorable moments, luxury stays and dining delights: here’s what they had to say.

Varana Hotel, Krabi

Thailand’s self-care sanctuaries

The trip began with a deep breath – literally – at the Varana Hotel in Krabi. For Keelin, this holistic haven was the perfect place to unwind and shake off the jetlag. “Varana was all about the feel-good factor,” she said. “With activities like paddle fit and aqua hydrotherapy to healthy meals and fresh juices (like the aptly named Flat Belly juice), it’s a go-to Thailand retreat for wellness by the waves.”

Wellness isn’t just an offering in Thailand, it’s woven into every aspect of your stay. “The hotels have a natural calm about them, with zen décor, amazing spas and staff who always greet you with a warm wai. And the paradisical surroundings are pure therapy – ocean, beaches and rainforests on your doorstep,” she said.

Pimalai Resort & Spa on Koh Lanta exudes tranquillity and left Keelin awestruck. “Set among carp ponds and waterfalls, the jungle spa offers an array of muscle-melting treatments, including a three-day wellness programme for a total reset,” she said.

Hillside Ocean Villa, Pimalai Resort & Spa, Koh Lanta

Picture perfect scenery

For Jared, Thailand’s scenery is the ultimate eye candy. “Krabi’s limestone cliffs, towering over jade-coloured waters, are so striking they almost don’t look real,” he said. But it was tiny and bohemian Koh Jum, also known as Koh Pu, that surprised him. “It’s peaceful and unspoiled, not yet overrun by mass tourism – the kind of place you want to visit now before it’s firmly on the map.”

When it came to capturing the perfect shot, Pimalai Resort & Spa on Koh Lanta was a standout. “The private villas with infinity pools overlooking the Andaman Sea were stunning. And the wildlife sightings – think dusky-leaf monkeys, monitor lizards and sprightly tree frogs – added a wild spin to the luxury hotel experience,” Jared noted.

Koh Jum Beach Villas

Authentic adventures

Louis was drawn to the more authentic side of Thailand, away from the tourist magnets. His favourite stay was Koh Jum Beach Villas, which he described as ‘serene, luxurious and untouched’.

One of his top moments was a tuk-tuk tour of the Koh Jum. “Life moves at a noticeably slower pace here,” Louis shared. “Watching locals craft rubber from trees, visiting a remote beach at the northern tip and wandering through a tiny village gave me a real sense of the way life has been here for generations.”

“Travelling by long-tail boat was an experience in itself. They might not be the comfiest, but it’s such an iconic way to get around and take in the scenery,” he said.

For a more refined take on authenticity, Louis talked about Layana Resort & Spa on Koh Lanta. “This adults-only bolthole is cast far away from any hustle or bustle,” he said. “The service, the serenity and the setting – it’s a dream spot for couples.”

Banyan Tree Krabi

Luxury living & wow moments

Katie was captivated the moment she stepped into Banyan Tree Krabi’s lobby. “Panoramic sea views with the Hong Islands in the distance—it was absolutely breathtaking,” she said.

Pimalai Resort & Spa had been on Katie’s hotel bucket list for years, and it didn’t disappoint. She recommends the Hillside Ocean Villas, each with a private infinity plunge pool and nestled in the forest. “Waking up to the sounds of nature, taking a morning dip and soaking in endless sea views was even better than I imagined,” she shared.

Banyan Tree Phuket

Banyan Tree Phuket gets a worthy mention too. “The level of attention to detail is second to none, from the beautifully designed rooms to the signature Banyan Tree touches, like the subtle Thai Chamanard blossom scent throughout every room,” she said. Being welcomed with traditional Thai drinks in crystal glasses and receiving Thai leis at check-in, made the stay even more special.

SAii Phi Phi Island Village

Dining delights

The food was a hit all round. Varana Resort started the day right with wholesome breakfasts, featuring homemade spreads and fresh juices. For those seeking nourishing, plant-based food, SAii Phi Phi Island Village has a wide range of vegetarian and vegan options like zingy papaya salads and fragrant Tom Yum soup.

The Tubkaak Krabi Boutique Resort, Krabi

For Louis and Katie, the most authentic dining experience was at The Tubkaak Krabi Boutique Resort. “The setting – dark wood, twinkly lights and lush greenery – felt quintessentially Thai,” Katie shared. Lunch was a celebration of flavours, with dishes like pomelo salad and mango sticky rice – a must-try dessert when in Thailand.

The dining at Banyan Tree Krabi was at the top of Jared’s wow list. “Sunset cocktails at Kredkaew Bar followed by innovative dishes and sparkling wine at Saffron, was easily my favourite evening,” he said.

Top travel tips for Thailand

Jo has some top tips for anyone heading to Thailand:

Respect local culture and customs: “If you’re visiting temples or religious sites, make sure to cover your shoulders and knees and avoid wearing anything too revealing.”

Learn a few Thai phrases: “Most people in tourist areas speak English but learning basics like ‘Sawadee’ (hello) and ‘Khop khun’ (thank you) goes a long way in showing respect.”

Carry local currency: “Small shops, markets and remote areas may not accept cards, so it’s always a good idea to have cash on hand. Koh Jum, for example, doesn’t have any cash points.”

Don’t be afraid to try new things: “The best memories often come from unexpected moments –Thailand has plenty of those!”.

Travel to Thailand in style with Eva Air

Our experts flew Premium Economy with Eva Air via Bangkok. With direct flights from London and features like spacious seats, mood lighting and plenty of legroom, it was smooth sailing from take-off to touchdown. “The seat was so comfortable – I managed seven hours of sleep both ways,” Katie shared.

Jo was impressed by the Thai-inspired dishes served on board. Entertainment was another bonus, with a mix of Thai films and music setting the tone for the trip, alongside the latest blockbusters and popular TV shows. Jared called it “a stress-free and enjoyable experience,” praising the friendly crew and tasty food.

Louis spotlighted the comfort and little touches in Premium Economy, like the complimentary amenity kits with essentials like a sleep mask, ear plugs and fluffy socks, which made the long-haul journey fly over.
