Actor and Strictly star Rose Ayling-Ellis set off on a sensational road trip through an authentic, unvarnished America. Neon-lit cities, rose-hued mountains. Real cowboys, great pie. And so little traffic. But oh, so much soul. Here she shares her highlights.
The route
Los Angeles ⇒ Joshua Tree ⇒ Lake Havasu ⇒ Flagstaff ⇒ Sedona ⇒ Scottsdale ⇒ Las Vegas
Lights, camera, action: Los Angeles
Los Angeles is so iconic, being here is like meeting your favourite film star. From the beach at Santa Monica to shopping on Rodeo Drive and attractions like Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and the Walk of Fame, there’s so much to see! I loved the hiking trails and seeing the Hollywood sign.
Gnarly trees and starry skies: Joshua Tree
The two desert ecosystems of Mojave and Colorado collide at Joshua Tree National Park, famous for its gnarly, spiky trees and otherworldly rock formations. But the real magic happens at night. With its International Dark Sky Park status, it’s one of the best places to see the Milky Way, free from light pollution.
Cruising Route 66: Flagstaff
Travelling along the legendary Route 66 to Flagstaff felt like stepping into a movie. This city in northern Arizona’s high-country mountains has a rugged charm and a nostalgic Americana vibe – think classic cars, roadside diners and epic landscapes.
Where to stay ➜ Little America Hotel, nestled in 500 scenic, pine-covered acres, is the perfect base. Its Canadian maple furnishings, marble fittings and floor-to-ceiling windows are a real slice of traditional hospitality, whether you’re here to wander the pine forests or take a trip to the Grand Canyon.
The Grand Canyon – believe the hype
If you’re in Arizona, a trip to the Grand Canyon is non-negotiable. This mile-deep valley is a monumental sight guaranteed to stop you in your tracks. There are all kinds of ways to explore – hiking the Bright Angel Trail, rafting on the Colorado River or just gazing in wonder from the north or south rim.
Red rocks and zen stops: Sedona
Sedona’s magnetic energy is said to emanate from the earth. This spectacular desert town is surrounded by rocky outcrops, forests and wilderness areas and has long attracted communities of artists, healers and spiritual seekers. Join in yoga or meditation or hike through the canyons.
Hidden gem: The Oak Creek Trail
We would never have found this without an insider tip from Kuoni. As you walk, towering red cliffs give way to lush forested canyons. The trail crosses the river 13 times and there’s the opportunity to cool off in swimming holes along the way. But the best bit? There was no one else there.
Eyes on the pies: Scottsdale
Make a stop at Rock Springs in Black Canyon City on the way to Scottsdale from Sedona. They have the best pies! I had cherry, pumpkin and pecan. Far from being a lifeless sand dune, the plains surrounding Scottsdale contribute to the boom in the regions food scene.
A helluva town: Las Vegas
It’s not called the City of Lights for nothing! It’s a neon explosion and we loved experiencing the excitement of the casinos. Sin City has a staggering number of award-winning restaurants and luxury shops alongside a constant stream of dazzling entertainment.
Unmissable Detours
Horseshoe Bend & Antelope Canyon: Combine these for a full day of jaw-dropping scenery. The easy walk to Horseshoe Bend rewards you with silver-screen-worthy views, while Antelope Canyon’s winding sandstone walls are picture-perfect.
Hoover Dam: Just 40 minutes from Vegas, this engineering marvel offers dizzying views and tours. Bonus: Watch the time zones change between Arizona and Nevada.
Slide Rock State Park: Families will love Slide Rock State Park in Sedona. This natural water park is perfect for swimming, jumping and sliding, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of Sedona’s red rock scenery.
Seligman: This tiny town, inspired Pixar’s Cars, and is a nostalgic stop along Route 66. Snap photos of vintage cars, brightly painted shops and classic Americana diners.
